The 15-year special catch-up

403(b) plans have a unique catch-up for employees with 15 or more years of service at a qualified organization (public schools, hospitals, churches, etc.). This allows up to an additional $3,000 per year, up to a lifetime maximum of $15,000. This is separate from the age 50+ catch-up and can be used in addition to it.

403(b) vs 401(k) limits

The elective deferral and catch-up limits are the same for 403(b) and 401(k) plans. The 403(b) is the only plan with the 15-year service catch-up, which can be valuable for long-tenured teachers and hospital employees.
